Memorial Day weekend 2018 is a special time of remembrance. So this week, we at Palm State Mortgage depart from the usual custom. And instead of the housing and mortgage news, we want to bring you information about our U.S.A. Memorial Day.
The three day Memorial Day Holiday is a time when we will see happy crowds of family and friends celebrating the arrival of the first official weekend of the season of summer.
This is a wonderful time for families in our beloved state of Florida, where there is a bounty of scenic nature, fun theme parks and fine weather for us to enjoy.
Everywhere in the United States, the Memorial Day weekend holiday instigates backyard parties, picnics, and gatherings of friends and families. Recreational plans stretch from coast to coast as people dust off their boats and clean up their barbecue grills.
We believe these are wonderful activities to initiate the summer spirit of 2018. However, we also believe that we must never lose the true meaning of the holiday. Many do not realize the true meaning of Memorial Day.
Memorial Day: How Much Do You Know?
The custom of setting aside Memorial Day as a holiday actually originated so that citizens would have the time to honor our nation’s military dead. There are ceremonies, festivals and parades in many U.S.A. communities.
This year, we hope you will remember the festivities are designed to honor the members of the Americans Armed Forces who died in the service of their country. This was meant to be a time off from work. This is a time that was set aside for decorating graves of loved ones who fell in battle.
Parades in Florida and across the country will be remembering and honoring those service men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country.
So for Memorial Day, 2019, Let us vow to pause in the three-day celebration of our lives, to recognize their deaths.
Let us steal a moment from the first fun of the summer, and put a flower on a hero’s grave.
At Palm State Mortgage, we bow our heads. We take a moment to remember there were soldiers who gave up their lives to keep us free and safe in our American homes.
For some really new insight into the story of this holiday and its significance, we invite you to read some forgotten details, the historical truth behind Memorial Day at this informative source.

Memorial Day Weekend: Please Drive Safely
The holiday is a wonderful time for celebration with family and friends.
However, it is also a dangerous time with all the holiday traffic. CBS calls Memorial Day “the deadliest holiday of the year.” It led with an average of 312 fatalities a year from 2011 to 2015.
According to the AAA auto club, the nation expects 36.1 million people will travel during the long weekend. That is a lot of cars and potential danger.
In Florida, we are expecting approximately 1.9 million travelers. Of course, all of these travelers also signal a recovering economy.
Our research shows that “Central Florida hotels and theme parks are bracing for big crowds this weekend when travel is expected to hit its highest Memorial Day level since 2005.”
We know some of you might think there’s nothing like a good brew with a burger or a sparkling cocktail before dinner. However, neither of these mix with driving. Just please remember, if your party has alcoholic drinks: Caution. Car keys and alcohol do not make a tasty drink. They are definitely not a “Shirley Temple.” And “buzzed driving is drunk driving.”
Did you know that over 40 percent of the crashes on American roads were related to unwise alcohol consumption? So, we add our voice to the many who urge you to drink responsibly.
So, while we vow to stay mindful of the spirit of Memorial Day, let’s also vow to drive safe and drive with caution. It is not a good idea to spend any part of the holiday weekend in the emergency room or in jail.
Plea for the Holiday and Beyond
Use your seatbelt! The Orlando Sentinel reported that, “Buckle-up deputies are on the lookout. Orange County sheriff deputies have just begun a two-week, seat-belt enforcement campaign.
The “Click It or Ticket” effort comes as summer is on the horizon and the travel-heavy Memorial Day weekend begins Friday, said Jane Watrel, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.
1. Not wearing a seat belt in Orange County can cost you a $114 fine.”
2. Make sure your friends and families (passengers) are buckled into their seatbelts also.
3. Obey all speed limits, and keep in mind that traffic congestion may require driving more slowly.
4. Don’t drive distracted: Anything that takes your full attention off of the road, even for a second, could be the cause a serious or fatal accident. “This includes texting, changing the radio station, talking to passengers, etc.”
Proud To Be An American
The words from this special Lee Greenwood song remind us of the special pride we feel to be an American. If you have forgotten some of the words, read them now and remember.
We hope it will put you, as it does us, in the spirit of the Memorial Day Holiday.
“Proud To Be An American” By Lee Greenwood
If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.
And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.
From the lakes of Minnesota to the hills of Tennessee,
Across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,
From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
And it’s time we stand and say:
I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land! God bless the U.S.A.
We hope this historical background and traffic tips will make Memorial Day more meaningful. And Palm State Mortgage wishes, you a safe, happy and heartfelt Memorial Holiday—and week!
